Where is Gluten hiding?

With Gluten intolerance on the rise, it's a natural progression for cosmetics companies to jump on the Gluten-free boat and make claims that their cosmetics don't contain gluten. While I'm not saying that ALL companies that claim to be gluten free aren't, it's important to be wary of what you're putting on your face!

Gluten can cause many different reactions in different people depending on the level of severity of the allergy or intolerance. Reactions can range from throat swelling and hives to nausea. So the question remains, if I'm not eating the gluten will I still have a reaction? The answer is simple, if you have a history of reactions with gluten you should avoid it in all forms! This means even in cosmetics.
Gluten is common in many products because of it's properties as an emulsifier and stabilizer. While you may only have a reaction if the gluten is eaten, think of how many times a day you touch your face or lick your lips. If those products on your face or lips contain gluten, you could inadvertently end up ingesting some of that gluten. Labeling also poses an issue, if you are using a singular beauty product they might not have a list of ingredients posted on the packaging and even if they do there are many different names for gluten. Some of those names include kernal flour, cyclodextrin, dextrin, Hydrolized wheat (flour, gluten, protein, starch) wheat amino acids, wheat protein, yeast extract, triticum vulgare (germ, oil, gluten, starch) secale cereale seed flour, wheat germ glycerides, hydrolized malt extract, hydrolized oat flour, hydrolized vegetable protein, wheatgermamidopropyl ethyldimonium ethosulfate, and wheat germamidoprpalkonium chloride.

Some cosmetics companies that cater to having gluten free cosmetics are: Everyday MineralsKristin Campbell BeautyMonave Cosmetics,Red Apple Lipsticks100% Pure CosmeticsAfterglow CosmeticsJoelle CosmeticsEcco BellaBare MineralsIt CosmeticsGabriel CosmeticsMira Bella, and Too Faced. I recommend double checking some of the labeling and making sure they contain no gluten before using the products however, as a few of thee companies have one or two products containing gluten, mainly mascara or eyeliner.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more information regarding different allergy friendly beauty products!
